PANJE / The Panje Project

Supported by the NGO organization Panje, women in Zanzibar are fighting for girls and women to be allowed to participate in swimming lessons. Although many of the women work in the water on seaweed farms from a young age, according to religious authorities, they are not allowed to learn how to swim. Seaweed is rich in agar and carrageenan, very popular in the food and cosmetics industries, and thus an important source of income for the population.

Among 151 shortlists in 16 categories, young director Steve Won was honored with silver, among others, in the category "Changing the world frame by frame" at the Cannes Young Directors Award 2021.
